Description
The project corresponds to the final design study of the San Cristóbal Variant, located in the Chulumani – Irupana – Sacambaya road section, part of the Unduavi – Chulumani highway, in the Yungas region of the La Paz department. The objective of the study was to identify and design the best technical alternative to solve the geological instability presented in the San Cristóbal sector, a critical area of the road corridor due to the presence of active geological faults and extreme topographic conditions. CHARACTERISTICS OF THE INTERVENTION AREA: Mountainous topography with steep slopes. Climate and vegetation typical of a tropical zone. High susceptibility to geodynamic processes (landslides, erosion, slope instability). STUDIES CARRIED OUT: During the preparation of the study, the following technical analyses were carried out: Topography Geology Geotechnics Geophysics Hydrology Hydraulics These studies allowed us to understand the physical and structural conditions of the terrain, as well as the hydrological behavior of the intervention area, key factors for the development of sustainable and safe road solutions. ANALYZED ALTERNATIVES: As part of the design process, five alternatives were evaluated to resolve the problem of connectivity and road safety in the San Cristóbal sector: Slope stabilization Construction of a tunnel, with connected accesses via bridges at both ends Construction of retaining walls Variant of 20 km of new road, which allows avoiding the existing geological fault Other complementary combined configurations Each alternative was evaluated considering technical, economic, environmental, and safety criteria, allowing us to determine the most viable solution for its future implementation.
